On Saturday, January 15th, a gunman entered Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, TX, holding hostages who were there for Sabbath worship for much of the day. We are grateful that all four hostages made it out safely, and thankful for law enforcement, first responders, and the security training that our partner Secure Community Network provided to this community. The horrifying attack on the Colleyville synagogue was a continuation of a troubling and unacceptable trend of attacks on Jewish houses of worship and individuals who are visibly Jewish, incidents of vandalism and arson, and the antisemitism and online hate that contain implicit threats and can incite such attacks.
The Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) has been an important tool to help secure Jewish and other communities that face regular threats to their safety and well-being. Following the events in Colleyville, Jewish Federations are calling on Congress to double funding for FEMA’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) to allow Jewish and other institutions targeted by hate, violence, and threats to protect their communities.
